Lothar Baumgarten - Die Namen der Bäume: Hylaea - Van Abbemuseum 1982

Published on the occasion of Lothar Baumgarten exhibition at Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven in 1982.
The book, which was exhibited at Documenta 7, begins with a list of the names of South American trees, and then segues into a narrative, interspersed with photographs and found images, the product of the artist's 18 month exploration of a Yanomomi village in Venezuela, a community which at that time had almost no contact with the outside world.

Like his fellow artist Marcel Broodthaers, whose work he shares a dialogue with (Broodthaer's postcard 'Veritable Eau de Cologne / Fuchs Mais Qui Mangera le Fromage?' was a response to Baumgarten's exhibition 'T'E-NE-T'E. Eine mythologische Vorführung'), Baumgarten's work critiques institutional representation, and also explores the anthropological implications of naming.
First edition of 740.
